Where to get help

Nobody on this page sells anything, and none of them are us. These are the services that exist in Britain to get between you and a gambling account, ranked by how quickly they answer rather than by how well known they are.

Last updated 15 October 2026 All free · most answer 24 hours a day
If you need someone today

National Gambling Helpline — 0808 8020 133. Free, confidential, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, run by GamCare. Live chat and WhatsApp run alongside the phone line.

If you are thinking about ending your life, call Samaritans on 116 123 first. Free from any phone, including a mobile with no credit, and it does not show on the bill. Gambling debt and suicidal thoughts travel together far more often than the industry acknowledges. That call comes before every other thing on this page.

You do not have to be in crisis to use any of this, and you do not have to have decided to stop. “I think I am spending too much” is a complete reason to call. Every service below is free at the point of use; none of them reports you to anyone; none of them requires a diagnosis, a GP letter or a minimum level of harm.

Treatment is cognitive behavioural therapy, typically 8–12 weekly sessions, one-to-one or in a group, online or in person. You can refer yourself — you do not need to go through a GP first, though a GP can point you to the nearest service.

Samaritans 116 123 24 hours a day, every day
For: Anyone who cannot see a way forward, whatever the cause.
Free from any phone, including a mobile with no credit, and it does not appear on the bill. Gambling debt and suicidal thoughts travel together more often than the industry admits — if that is where you are, this number first, everything else after.

GAMSTOP Registration online, any time
For: Anyone who wants the decision taken out of their hands.
One free registration blocks you from every gambling site and app licensed in Great Britain. Choose six months, one year, five years, or five years that renew automatically. It cannot be lifted before the period ends. When the period does end the block stays on for a further seven years unless you actively remove it, and removal has a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours. There is now a separate scheme for betting shops.

BetBlocker Install any time
For: Blocking at device level, including sites GAMSTOP does not reach.
Free charity software for phones, tablets and computers. Works worldwide, so it covers offshore sites that a British scheme cannot touch. Needs no account and asks for no personal data.
betblocker.org
Gamban Install any time
For: The same job as BetBlocker, with a different blocklist.
Blocking software available free to many people in Britain through GamCare. Running blocking software and GAMSTOP together closes more doors than either alone.

When the problem has become money

Gambling harm arrives as a debt problem long before it arrives as a health problem, and the debt is the part that keeps people gambling — the hole feels like something one more win could fill. It cannot, and the debt is treatable on its own terms.

WhereFree numberWhat it does
StepChange Debt Charity 0800 138 1111 Free debt advice and a debt plan, online at any hour or by freephone. Never pay for debt advice — charities give it free, and firms that charge for it are selling you something else.
Citizens Advice — Free help with debt, benefits, housing and dealing with creditors, in person and online.
Your bank — Most UK banks can block gambling transactions from the app, usually with a delay of up to 48 hours before the block can be switched off again. Gambling on a credit card has been banned in Britain since 14 April 2020 — for every product except non-remote lotteries — so a card that still works for a deposit is a debit card.

One rule worth holding on to: never pay for debt advice. It is given free by charities. A firm that charges you for it is selling a product, and people in gambling debt are exactly who those firms look for.

If you are the one worried about someone else

The National Gambling Helpline is for you too, on the same number — you do not need the gambler's permission or even their knowledge to call it. Gam-Anon runs meetings specifically for partners, parents and friends, separately from the gambler's own meetings, and the NHS gambling services run a family and friends service alongside treatment.

What actually happens when you call

People put this off because they imagine a confrontation. What happens on the helpline is a conversation with an adviser who asks what has been going on, how much is involved and what you would like to change. There is no script that ends in you being told to stop. If you want treatment, they arrange it; if you want to think about it, that is a complete outcome for one call.

NHS treatment is cognitive behavioural therapy, usually eight to twelve weekly sessions, one-to-one or in a group, online or in person. The waiting time varies by region. You can refer yourself — you do not need to go through a GP, although a GP can tell you which service covers your area. Gamblers Anonymous requires no referral at all: meetings run daily and you simply turn up.

If what you want is a barrier rather than a conversation, the fastest one is GAMSTOP: one free registration blocks every gambling site licensed in Great Britain, it takes minutes, and it cannot be undone on a bad evening. The trade-off worth knowing in advance is that it is genuinely hard to reverse — when the period you chose runs out the block stays on for a further seven years unless you actively remove it, and removal carries a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours. That is the point of it.

Why a casino review site publishes this

Because the honest version of what we do includes this page. We are paid when people open accounts, which means we are exactly the sort of site that should be easiest to find help from, not hardest. Nothing on this page is an affiliate link and nothing on it earns us anything. If you want the shorter version — limits, blocks and the order to try them in — it is on the responsible gambling page.
